Samoilenko shines as PLDT upsets Creamline in epic five-set PVL opener

The 2024 PVL Reinforced Conference kicked off with a bang on Tuesday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City. In a thrilling five-set battle, the PLDT High Speed Hitters stunned the heavily favored Creamline Cool Smashers with a 16-25, 25-22, 24-26, 25-19, 15-12 victory.

Despite missing key players like Savi Davison and Kim Kianna Dy, PLDT defied expectations. Russian import Lena Samoilenko emerged as the hero for the High Speed Hitters, leading the offensive charge with a spectacular 34-point performance. Her dominance at the net included 32 attacks and two aces, showcasing her offensive prowess.

Samoilenko wasn’t alone in her stellar performance. Libero Kath Arado showcased exceptional defensive skills, contributing 24 excellent digs, while setter Kim Fajardo orchestrated the PLDT offense with 19 excellent sets.

Creamline, missing stars Alyssa Valdez, Tots Carlos, and Jema Galanza due to various commitments, struggled to find their rhythm throughout the match. Although American import Erica Staunton notched 20 points, and Bernadeth Pons and Michele Gumabao contributed 18 and 16 points respectively, it wasn’t enough to overcome a determined PLDT squad.

This victory marks a significant upset for PLDT and a historic moment for the PVL. It’s the first time Creamline has lost a tournament opener since 2019, proving that anything is possible in the world of volleyball.

PLDT will carry the momentum into their next match against Galeries Tower on Saturday. Meanwhile, Creamline will look to bounce back from this surprising defeat when they face Farm Fresh on the same day. Both teams will undoubtedly be hungry to adjust their strategies and emerge victorious in their upcoming matches.
