Philippines Stuns Tajikistan 1-0 in AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifiers
The Philippines U23 Men’s National Football Team earned a massive result in Dushanbe, defeating host nation Tajikistan 1-0 early Sunday morning (Philippine time) at the Republican Central Stadium.
The victory keeps the Philippines in the running for a spot in the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Cup.
Match Recap
Coming off a narrow 2-1 loss to Syria in their opener, the Philippines entered the match determined to bounce back. Tajikistan dominated possession in the first half and created several dangerous chances, but the visitors stayed composed, holding firm to keep the score 0-0 at halftime.
The second half opened with physical play on both sides, highlighted by yellow cards to Gavin Muens of the Philippines and Olimzoda Fathullo of Tajikistan in the 54th minute. The breakthrough finally came in the 71st minute when Noah Leddel connected on a perfectly delivered corner kick from captain Sandro Reyes, giving the Philippines the all-important lead.
Tajikistan pushed hard for an equalizer, with six minutes of added time and multiple late attempts. But Philippine goalkeeper Nicholas Guimaraes stood tall, producing two clutch saves against Azizbek Khaitov and Abubakr Sulaymonov, while also confidently clearing dangerous crosses to preserve the clean sheet.
Standout Performances
While Leddel scored the decisive goal, his defensive contributions were equally valuable—making critical clearances and blocks, including a vital intervention in the 8th minute against Muhammadali Azizboev. Guimaraes, meanwhile, was a rock at the back, ensuring the Philippines protected their slim advantage until the final whistle.
Group K Standings
With the win, the Philippines climbed to three points, level with Tajikistan in second place. Syria remains on top with six points, while Nepal sits at the bottom with no points.
What’s Next
The Philippines now face a must-win showdown against Nepal on Tuesday, September 9, at 9:00 p.m. (Philippine time). Only the 11 group winners and the four best-ranked runners-up will qualify for the final tournament in Saudi Arabia, set for January 7–25, 2026. Tajikistan, meanwhile, will face group leaders Syria.
A Historic Win
This result marks just the second-ever victory for the Philippines in the history of the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifiers. Their first came in 2023, also by a 1-0 scoreline, against Bangladesh. The win not only boosts their confidence but also keeps their dream alive of advancing to the continental finals.
