Philippines Falls to Poland, 6–0, in Tough Futsal World Cup Debut at Home
The Philippine women’s futsal team endured a difficult start to its FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup campaign after suffering a 6–0 loss to Poland on Friday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
The defeat came in front of a home crowd which had filled the venue with hope and anticipation for the Filipina5’s historic first appearance in the inaugural tournament.
Strong Start, Missed Chances
The Filipina5 opened the match with promise. Dionesa Tolentin came close just four minutes in, hitting the left post and briefly igniting the crowd with the possibility of an upset. But despite the early energy, the Philippines couldn’t turn their chances into goals.
Poland eventually broke through in the 7th minute, when Julia Basta fired a right-footed shot that slipped past goalkeeper Samantha Hughes. Tolentin nearly equalized soon after, but her attempt once again hit the post — a moment that proved pivotal as momentum steadily shifted to the visiting side.
Poland Controls the Match
Poland showed why it entered the tournament as the world’s No. 14 team. After receiving a yellow card earlier, Natalia Matuszewska doubled the Polish lead with a close-range finish just moments before halftime, sending the Filipina5 into the break trailing 2–0.
In the second half, the visitors tightened their grip on the match. Julia Szostak made it 3–0, followed by Basta’s second goal of the night as Poland pulled further away.
The Filipina5’s struggles grew after an unfortunate own goal from Lanie Ortillo, whose deflection off a Polish attempt extended the lead to 5–0 in the 27th minute. Poland sealed the rout in the 30th minute through a set-piece strike by Klaudia Dyminska, completing a dominant 6–0 finish.
Historic Night for Futsal — and a Harsh Opening Test
The match capped a milestone opening day for the inaugural women’s futsal world championship — an event witnessed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who attended the Filipina5’s debut on home soil.
Earlier in the day, Argentina set the tone for Group A with a 6–0 victory over Morocco. It was Ana Ontiveros who scored the first-ever goal of the tournament, marking a historic moment for Argentina and the competition itself.

What’s Next for the Filipina5
Despite the tough loss, the Filipina5 remain determined as they move to their next assignment. The Philippines will face Morocco on Monday, while Poland prepares for a high-stakes meeting with world No. 6 Argentina, also scheduled at the same venue.
The road ahead is challenging, but the Filipina5 continue their journey with the goal of bouncing back — and representing the country with pride — in the world’s first FIFA Women’s Futsal World Cup.
