All-Filipino Cignal Shocks PLDT, Ends 15-Game Streak in PVL

The Cignal Super Spikers defied the odds and made a statement victory, sweeping sister team PLDT High Speed Hitters in straight sets, 25-17, 25-22, 25-21, to claim their first win in the 2025 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference on Tuesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

What made the win even more impressive was that Cignal played without a foreign reinforcement, after parting ways with Greek import Eva Chantava earlier in the week. Despite the setback, the all-Filipino lineup of head coach Shaq delos Santos rose to the challenge and handed the red-hot PLDT squad its first loss in 15 matches, ending a streak that dated back to the preseason PVL On Tour tournament.

Erika Santos, the reigning On Tour MVP, led the way for Cignal with a clutch performance. She exploded for 17 points, all from attacks, including four straight points that turned a late 19-20 deficit in the third set into a 23-20 lead.

After PLDT’s Savi Davison momentarily halted the run with a checkball hit, Tin Tiamzon and Heather Guino-o delivered the finishing blows — an off-the-block strike followed by a game-clinching service ace — to seal the sweep in one hour and 22 minutes.

Rising star Ishie Lalongisip provided strong support with 15 points built on 12 attacks and three aces, while also contributing 11 excellent receptions and eight digs on defense. Tiamzon and Rose Doria-Aquino added nine and eight points, respectively, in a balanced effort for the Super Spikers.

Cignal dominated offensively, outspiking PLDT 50-34 and outblocking them 5-2, while also winning the service battle 7-4 — a testament to their aggressive and disciplined approach.

Davison was once again the bright spot for PLDT, scoring 14 points alongside nine excellent receptions and seven digs, but her efforts weren’t enough to keep their unbeaten run alive.

The victory pushed Cignal to 1-2 in Pool A, tying Capital1 in the standings, while PLDT dropped to 2-1 after its first loss of the conference.

Cignal will look to build on its momentum when it faces the Nxled Chameleons on Saturday, October 25, while PLDT aims to bounce back against the undefeated Farm Fresh Foxies in its next outing.
