Alas Pilipinas’ Historic Run Ends in Heartbreaking Five-Set Loss to Iran
The dream run of Alas Pilipinas at the 2025 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship came to a painful end on Thursday night, as the Filipinos fell in a five-set thriller to four-time Asian champions Iran, 21-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-23, 22-20, before a roaring crowd of 14,240 fans at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The Philippines, ranked No. 77 in the world, came within a point of clinching a historic Round of 16 berth, but a dramatic fifth-set challenge changed the course of the match. At 19-18, the Nationals thought they had sealed victory with a Kim Malabunga block on Ali Haghparast. The team and the crowd erupted in celebration—only for the moment to be overturned after video review revealed a net fault. What would have been the Philippines’ greatest triumph turned into one of the cruelest heartbreaks, as Iran regained momentum and closed out the decider behind clutch points from Haghparast and Yousef Poshtpari.
Brave Fight on the World Stage
Alas Pilipinas showed resilience from the opening whistle. Led by captain Bryan Bagunas, who finished with 22 points, the Nationals pounced on Iran’s early errors to take the first set. Though Iran leveled the match in Set 2, the Filipinos surged back in the third with a 10-3 run, capped by a Marck Espejo kill for a commanding 2-1 lead.
Iran, however, displayed its championship pedigree. Powered by Poriya Hossein Khanzadeh and Ali Hajipour, who each scored 22 points, the visitors edged out the fourth set before outlasting the Philippines in the dramatic final frame. Despite trailing 10-6, the Nationals rallied with a 6-1 burst to grab a late 12-11 lead, igniting hopes of another stunning upset. But Iran’s composure down the stretch proved decisive.
Standing Tall Despite Defeat
Bagunas once again carried the offensive load, supported by Leo Ordiales with 21 points, Espejo with 15, and Malabunga with 10. Setter Joshua Retamar orchestrated the attack with 42 excellent sets while contributing five points of his own. The Philippines outplayed Iran in stretches, particularly in blocking and transition plays, but fell just short of the finishing push.
The heartbreaking loss ended the Nationals’ hopes of advancing to the Round of 16, but their campaign will be remembered as a turning point for Philippine men’s volleyball. Just two days prior, Alas Pilipinas shocked the world by defeating Egypt for its first-ever World Championship win. Their inspired performance against Iran showed that the Filipinos can stand toe-to-toe with some of the best in the sport.
With the victory, Iran improved to 2-1 and advanced as Asia’s lone representative in the knockout stage. The Philippines bowed out with pride, having left an indelible mark in its World Championship debut.
