Akari Shocks No. 1 Farm Fresh to Enter PVL Semifinals
Eighth-seeded Akari Chargers delivered the biggest upset of the 2025 PVL Reinforced Conference, sweeping top-ranked Farm Fresh Foxies in a stunning straight-set victory, 28-26, 30-28, 25-21, in the knockout quarterfinals on Monday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
With precision, grit, and ice-cold composure, the Chargers outplayed the Foxies in two grueling extended sets before sealing the deal in the third, securing their place in the semifinals and making PVL history in the process.
Akari became the lowest seed to ever reach the semifinals and the first No. 8 team to eliminate a No. 1 seed under the league’s traditional eight-team quarterfinal format.
Mitchem Leads Akari’s Historic Upset
Import Annie Mitchem powered Akari with a 25-point explosion—all coming from attacks—leading a balanced and composed performance from the Chargers. She received strong support from Eli Soyud and Grethcel Soltones, who chipped in 10 points each.
Floor general Justine Jazareno anchored Akari’s defense with 21 digs and 10 excellent receptions, while setter Mars Alba steered the offense with 19 excellent sets along with clutch plays in the crucial moments.
Thrilling First Two Sets
Both opening sets turned into nerve-wracking battles, with the Chargers escaping in dramatic fashion:
- Set 1 (28–26): Farm Fresh saved three set points from 23-24, but Mitchem’s off-the-block hit and Alba’s timely service ace gave Akari the early lead.
- Set 2 (30–28): The Foxies reached set point at 28-27, but Mitchem fired back-to-back kills to flip the score before Fifi Sharma sealed the frame with a kill block on Ces Molina, pushing Akari to a crucial 2-0 advantage.
- Set 3 (25-21): With momentum on their side, the Chargers pulled away from a tight 20-19 lead with a decisive 5-2 run, capped by Mitchem’s final kill that completed the sweep and sealed the monumental upset.
Farm Fresh Falls Short
Farm Fresh star Helene Rousseaux led all Foxies with 25 points on 23 attacks, one block and one ace, but received limited offensive support—no other Foxie reached double digits. Ces Molina added eight points, while Trisha Tubu contributed six.
Despite the loss, Farm Fresh battled in every frame but struggled to close out the extended sets where Akari showed more composure and defensive stability.
