Filipinas vs. Timor-Leste // 2025 ASEAN Women’s Championship
The Philippine women’s national football team—fondly known as the Filipinas—officially kick off their title defense in the ASEAN MSIG Serenity Cup 2025 (formerly the AFF Women’s Championship) with a highly anticipated opening match against Timor-Leste on Thursday night, August 7, at the Viet Tri Stadium in Phu Tho, Vietnam.
After clinching the championship crown in 2022 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium, where Sarina Bolden stole the spotlight with eight goals—including a 3-0 final victory over Thailand—the Filipinas are eager to make another deep run in the tournament.
But this year’s campaign won’t come easy.
Led by head coach Mark Torcaso, the squad is navigating a different challenge: the absence of key veterans due to scheduling conflicts and injuries. The ASEAN MSIG Serenity Cup 2025 falls outside the FIFA window, limiting player availability.
Who’s Out?
Several major names will miss the tournament: Sarina Bolden – out with an ACL tear, Katrina Guillou, Sara Eggesvik, Meryll Serrano, Angie Beard, and Jaclyn Sawicki. These players are either recovering from injuries or committed to their club duties abroad.
Who’s In? Meet the New-Look Filipinas
Despite the setbacks, the Filipinas have retained a strong core of seasoned players: Hali Long, Quinley Quezada, Chandler McDaniel, Olivia McDaniel, and Inna Palacios.
Alongside them, six debutants are stepping up to the senior level, aiming to make a strong impression: Midfielders Jaycee DeFazio, Isabella Alamo, and Adelaide Wyrzynski; Defenders: Azumi Oka and Lyka Cuenco; and Forward: Tea Pidding —all from the youth program—are set to make their senior team debut.
This tournament serves not only as a chance to defend the title for Filipinas, but also as vital preparation for next year’s AFC Women’s Asian Cup, which will be the qualifying stage for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Timor-Leste: Underdogs With a Point to Prove
Originally finishing fourth in the 2024 AFF Women’s Cup, Timor-Leste only joined this year’s ASEAN MSIG Serenity Cup after Singapore (3rd place) withdrew.
While they come into the match as clear underdogs, they’re a determined squad eager to seize the opportunity on this elevated stage. However, against the reigning champions, they’ll face an uphill battle.
The Filipinas are part of Group B, along with Australia U-23, Myanmar, and Timor-Leste.
The top two teams from each group will move on to the semifinals. Meanwhile, Group A features Thailand (2022 runner-up), Vietnam (hosts), Cambodia, and Indonesia.
More than just a title, this tournament marks a crucial step in the long-term vision for Philippine women’s football. With several fresh faces and seasoned leaders joining forces, the Filipinas aim to prove that even without some of their stars, they’re still a force to be reckoned with in Southeast Asia.
Will the new generation rise to the challenge? The road to glory starts Thursday night.
