Strong Group cruises past Malaysia, remains undefeated in Jones Cup
The Philippines’ Strong Group Athletics maintained their perfect record in the 2024 William Jones Cup Men’s Basketball Tournament, dismantling Malaysia by a score of 89-54 on Wednesday, July 17th, in Taiwan.
Following a competitive matchup through the first three quarters, Strong Group pulled away decisively in the final period. A dominant 13-3 run, capped off by a three-pointer from Rhenz Abando, provided them with a comfortable lead (59-48) heading into the final frame. From there, Strong Group continued their offensive onslaught, outscoring Malaysia 30-6 in the fourth quarter to secure a convincing victory.
While Chris McCullough remained Strong Group’s leading scorer with 16 points, 5 rebounds, and an assist, their success stemmed from a well-rounded offensive attack. Abando provided a double-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists, while Tajuan Agee (12 points, 7 rebounds), Ange Kouame (11 points), and Derrick Fenner (10 points) all contributed significantly.
Despite leading briefly in the third quarter and tying the score at 46-all, Malaysia struggled to keep pace with Strong Group’s offensive firepower in the final period. John Murry led the way for Malaysia with 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists, while former Ateneo player Joe Obasa added 13 points and 6 rebounds.
With this dominant victory, Strong Group remains atop the standings with a perfect 4-0 record. They will look to continue their winning streak when they face Future Sports USA on Thursday, July 18th, at 1:00 PM.
Strong Group’s undefeated record in the William Jones Cup is a testament to their balanced scoring attack, and defensive resilience. Their next matchup against Future Sports USA presents an opportunity to extend their dominance and solidify their position as a top contender for the championship title.
