Game 3 Preview: Meralco vs. Ginebra

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel is poised to secure a sweep as they take on the Meralco Bolts in Game 3 of the PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup quarterfinals at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Monday. With a 2-0 series lead, the Gin Kings are just one win away from advancing to the semifinals.

Ginebra’s Game 2 victory was a nail-biter, edging Meralco 104-103, thanks to a late-game heroics from Justin Brownlee. The seasoned import once again proved to be the difference-maker, draining a cold-blooded three-pointer over Meralco’s Allen Durham with 10.9 seconds remaining. Brownlee’s stellar performance was highlighted by his 39 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four triples.

Having bested Meralco in previous Governors’ Cup finals meetings, Ginebra knows how crucial it is to finish the job early. They’ll rely on Brownlee, who continues to haunt the Bolts, as well as the solid contributions from their key players. Scottie Thompson, coming off a 19-point effort in Game 2, has been Ginebra’s engine on both ends of the court, while Maverick Ahanmisi chipped in 15 points to support the team’s offensive firepower.

The Gin Kings’ depth has also played a vital role in their 2-0 series lead, with RJ Abarrientos and Japeth Aguilar adding 11 points apiece in the last game. Ginebra will need the same collective effort to close out the series and avoid giving Meralco any momentum.

On the other side, Meralco is fighting to keep their season alive. Despite Allen Durham’s strong Game 2 showing, where he finished with 39 points and 14 rebounds, the Bolts are still searching for answers on how to contain Brownlee. Chris Banchero and Chris Newsome will be key players to watch as they try to bounce back and prevent the sweep.

Game 3 tips off at 5:00 p.m., with Ginebra aiming to seal their spot in the semifinals and Meralco hoping to force a Game 4.
