Game 4 Preview: Converge vs. San Miguel

San Miguel Beer will look to advance to the semifinals as they face the Converge FiberXers in Game 4 of their best-of-five PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup quarterfinal series on Friday, October 1, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.

After coming agonizingly close to completing a sweep in Game 3, the Beermen will aim to bounce back from a heartbreaking 114-112 loss, where Alec Stockton’s buzzer-beating jumper gave Converge a stunning come-from-behind victory. Despite holding a 25-point lead, San Miguel saw their advantage disappear as the FiberXers staged an epic fourth-quarter rally, scoring 48 points to extend the series.

San Miguel, which had taken control of the first two games with 102-95 and 107-100 wins, now faces a revitalized Converge squad determined to stay alive in the postseason. The Beermen, led by June Mar Fajardo, CJ Perez, Marcio Lassiter, and import EJ Anosike, will need to shake off the disappointment of Game 3 and focus on securing a ticket to the semifinals.

Adding to their challenge is the fact that San Miguel is coming off a tough 87-81 loss to Korea’s Suwon KT Sonicboom in the East Asia Super League on Wednesday. This double setback—both in the PBA and internationally—adds extra pressure on the Beermen heading into Game 4.

For the FiberXers, the Game 3 win has infused new energy into their campaign. Converge, led by import Jalen Jones and the tandem of Stockton and Justin Arana, will hope to ride the momentum of their dramatic victory as they look to force a deciding Game 5. Stockton, who was initially assessed a flagrant foul penalty 2 in Game 3, saw the call downgraded to a penalty 1 after review, allowing him to remain in the game and deliver the winning shot.

Converge is hoping to bring the same grit and determination to Game 4, knowing that another upset is crucial to keeping their season alive. The FiberXers will rely on strong contributions from Stockton, Jones, Arana, and Brian Santos to match San Miguel’s formidable firepower.

A win for San Miguel will secure a best-of-seven semifinal showdown with Barangay Ginebra, who completed a three-game sweep of Meralco in their own quarterfinal series. For Converge, a victory would push the series to a deciding Game 5 and keep their championship hopes alive.

Tip-off for Game 4 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
