Strong Group overpowers Future Sports USA, extends undefeated streak in Jones Cup
The Philippines’ Strong Group-Athletics continued their dominant run in the 2024 William Jones Cup Men’s Basketball Tournament, defeating Future Sports USA by a score of 112-90 on Thursday, July 18th, at Xinzhuang Gymnasium in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
This victory extends their perfect record to a remarkable 5-0.
Despite trailing by 4 points at halftime (56-60), Strong Group flipped the script in the second half. They erupted for a decisive 33 points in the third quarter, effectively pulling away from the Americans. This surge was fueled by strong performances from Tajuan Agee (11 points) and Chris McCullough (5 points).
McCullough once again led the way for Strong Group with a game-high 24 points. He received significant support from Agee (19 points) and RJ Abarrientos (17 points). Jordan Heading chipped in with 11 points, contributing to their impressive offensive display.
Strong Group’s outside shooting proved to be a key factor in their victory. They connected on 13 out of 34 three-point attempts (38.2%), compared to Future Sports USA’s 12 successful three-pointers out of 30 attempts (40%).
Beyond their shooting prowess, Strong Group displayed their overall dominance throughout the game. They shot a higher percentage from two-point range (54.7% vs. 46.3%), outrebounded Future Sports USA (50 rebounds vs. 38 rebounds), and generated more assists (29 vs. 17) and steals (11 vs. 7).
With this dominant performance, Strong Group solidifies their position as the frontrunners in the tournament. They will seek to extend their undefeated streak to six games as they face Japan’s Under-22 team on Friday, July 19th, at 1:00 PM.
Future Sports USA falls to a 1-4 record with this loss. Hammer Bowen Moss led their scoring effort with 18 points, followed by Eliott Marcus Ryan (15 points) and Demetrius Thomas (14 points).
