San Miguel takes 2-0 lead over Converge

San Miguel Beermen displayed their trademark poise under pressure once again, fending off a late surge from Converge to secure a 107-100 victory in Game 2 of their PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup quarterfinals on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The win gives San Miguel a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series, moving them just one game away from the semifinals.

EJ Anosike led the charge for the Beermen with an explosive performance, pouring in 41 points along with nine rebounds and five assists. Anosike’s offensive firepower was crucial in helping San Miguel weather Converge’s late-game rally, proving that his debut performance in Game 1 was no fluke.

MVP June Mar Fajardo also delivered a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds, while providing crucial defense and late-game leadership that kept San Miguel in control down the stretch. Kris Rosales added 11 points and five assists, helping round out a balanced offensive attack for the Beermen.

Converge, however, refused to go down without a fight. After falling behind by double digits, the FiberXers mounted a furious fourth-quarter comeback, trimming the deficit to just one point at 97-96 following three clutch free throws from Bryan Santos. Moments later, Jalen Jones’ layup brought Converge within two, 100-98, as they put the pressure on San Miguel.

But San Miguel kept their composure, with Fajardo splitting free throws and Anosike delivering a crucial basket to give the Beermen a 103-98 cushion. CJ Perez sealed the win with a late layup, securing San Miguel’s path to victory.

Jones led Converge’s fight with 36 points and 12 rebounds, while Alec Stockton added 14 points. Bryan Santos and Justin Arana contributed 12 points each, though Arana was forced to exit the game after a knee injury.
