“Golden Boy” Carlos Yulo strikes gold again in men’s vault at Paris Olympics

Carlos Yulo, the “Golden Boy” of Philippine gymnastics, has once again made history, capturing his second gold medal at the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

Just a day after his victorious floor exercise performance, Yulo dazzled the audience and judges alike in the men’s vault finals at the Bercy Arena on Sunday night (Philippine time).

Yulo’s triumph in the vault finals not only adds to his gold medal from the floor exercise but also solidifies the Philippines’ impressive showing at the Summer Games. His stellar performance guarantees that the country will surpass its historic achievement from Tokyo 2020, where weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz won the nation’s first-ever Olympic gold.

The dynamic Filipino gymnast delivered an average score of 15.116 for his two vaults in the finals. He began with an exceptional Dargulescu vault, earning a score of 15.433, and followed it up with a Kasamatsu double twist, scoring 14.800. This outstanding performance allowed him to surpass Great Britain’s Harry Hepworth, who scored 14.949, and Armenia’s Artur Davtyan, who secured the silver with 14.966. Great Britain’s Jake Jarman finished just off the podium with a score of 14.933.

Yulo’s achievements in Paris make him only the fourth Filipino athlete to win multiple Olympic medals, joining swimmer Teófilo Yldefonso, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, and boxer Nesthy Petecio. His consistent excellence underscores his status as one of the world’s elite gymnasts and brings immense pride to the Philippines.

Yulo’s back-to-back gold medals have not only written a new chapter in Philippine sports history but have also inspired countless Filipinos, proving that with determination and hard work, anything is possible.
