Brownlee shines as Ginebra overpowers TNT, ties Finals series 2-2
Barangay Ginebra San Miguel turned up the offensive heat and knotted the PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup Finals at two games apiece with a commanding 106-92 win over TNT Tropang Giga in Game 4 on Sunday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
After a defensive grind in the first three games, Ginebra broke through the century mark for the first time in the series, fueled by a dazzling shooting display from Justin Brownlee and Stephen Holt.
Brownlee led all scorers with 34 points, adding six rebounds and four assists, while Holt, Maverick Ahanmisi, and Japeth Aguilar each chipped in 18 points, delivering a balanced attack that kept the Tropang Giga at bay.
The Gin Kings built a 12-point cushion, 54-42, by halftime, thanks to Brownlee’s aggressive play, which included a clutch three-point play. The offense kept rolling in the third quarter, with Aguilar and Brownlee combining for thunderous dunks and timely triples to preserve Ginebra’s lead, 85-77, entering the fourth.
Ginebra’s trio of Brownlee, Aguilar, and Holt put on a show in the third, outscoring TNT. Holt came alive in the second half, while Ahanmisi closed the game with nine fourth-quarter points, including a four-point play that stretched the Gin Kings’ lead to 101-90 with just over two minutes left. A dagger triple from Holt and a powerful slam from Brownlee sealed the victory, marking Ginebra’s second straight win after overcoming an 0-2 series deficit.
Despite a spirited effort from TNT’s Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, who tallied 28 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, and Calvin Oftana’s 26-point outing, the Tropang Giga’s defense faltered. Ginebra shot a scorching 56% from the field, exploiting TNT’s defensive lapses.
Scottie Thompson contributed 12 points and four assists despite battling foul trouble, while Ginebra’s defense outperformed TNT’s, registering nine steals to TNT’s four.
With the series now tied at 2-2, both teams will look to grab a crucial edge in Game 5 on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum, inching closer to the crown in what has become an intense, back-and-forth showdown.
