Alas Pilipinas overwhelmed by Thai powerhouse

Alas Pilipinas endured a tough defeat at the hands of Thailand, falling 12-25, 18-25, 10-25, in their second consecutive loss in the first leg of the 2024 SEA Women’s V.League on Saturday in Vinh Phuc, Vietnam.

Thailand’s offensive firepower was simply overwhelming. Their ability to consistently find open hitters and exploit the Philippine defense was evident throughout the match. The Thais’ precision in serving and passing also contributed significantly to their dominance.

On the other side of the net, Alas Pilipinas struggled to find their rhythm. The Filipinas were unable to mount any sustained offensive pressure and were consistently outplayed in all facets of the game. While the team displayed glimpses of competitiveness in the second set, it was not enough to challenge the Thai powerhouse.

The defeat leaves the Philippines in a precarious position as they face Indonesia in their final match of the first leg. To salvage any pride, the team will need to regroup and make significant adjustments.

No player from Alas Pilipinas reached double digits in scoring. Bella Belen and Alyssa Solomon managed to score five points each, while Thea Gagate and Faith Nisperos contributed four markers each.

Thailand’s Chatchu-on Moksri led the match with 11 points, while Ajcharaporn Kongyot added 10 in the win, showcasing their depth and efficiency on the court.

With this loss, the Philippines (0-2) will have another opportunity to turn their fortunes around on Sunday when they face Indonesia. Alas Pilipinas will be looking to avoid a winless campaign in the first leg of the tournament and gain some momentum moving forward.

A winless campaign in the first leg would be a bitter pill to swallow for the Filipinas, who were hoping to make a stronger statement in this year’s competition.
