Akari shocks Cignal, finishes Pool B unbeaten
The Akari Chargers continued their dominant run in the 2024 PVL Reinforced Conference, handing the Cignal HD Spikers their first loss with a 15-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-22 victory at the Philsports Arena on Tuesday.
With this win, the Chargers finished their Pool B games undefeated, boasting a perfect 5-0 record, while pushing Cignal down to a 4-1 standing.
American import Oly Okaro led the charge for Akari, delivering a powerhouse performance with 24 points.
Ivy Lacsina and Ced Domingo also played pivotal roles, contributing 14 and 10 points, respectively. Kamille Cal was instrumental in orchestrating the offense with 14 excellent sets and added eight points, including three blocks. Liberos Dani Ravena and Max Juangco showcased their defensive prowess with nine digs and nine receptions each.
Grethcel Soltones had an all-around performance, adding eight points, 19 receptions, and 11 digs, further solidifying Akari’s dominance on the court.
Despite a strong start, winning the first set convincingly at 25-15, the Cignal HD Spikers couldn’t maintain their momentum. Venezuelan import MJ Perez was the standout performer for Cignal, scoring 24 points along with 11 receptions and nine digs. However, she was the lone HD Spiker to reach double digits. Riri Meneses and Ces Molina contributed nine and eight points, respectively, but it wasn’t enough to counter Akari’s relentless attack.
Both Akari (5-0) and Cignal (4-1) will carry their impressive first-round records into the crossover second round. They will face the bottom three teams from Pool A, aiming to secure their spots in the next phase of the tournament. The Chargers, buoyed by their undefeated streak, will look to continue their winning ways, while the HD Spikers will aim to bounce back and regain their winning form.
As the PVL Reinforced Conference progresses, all eyes will be on Akari to see if they can maintain their perfect record and on Cignal to see how they respond to their first setback. The next round promises intense competition as the teams vie for supremacy and a chance to advance further in the tournament.
