San Miguel vs. TNT (Game 2) // PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup Finals

After a dramatic and controversial Game 1, the San Miguel Beermen and TNT Tropang 5G are set to clash once more in Game 2 of the PBA Philippine Cup finals. The highly anticipated match tips off on Wednesday, July 16th, at the iconic Smart Araneta Coliseum, promising another thrilling chapter in this best-of-seven championship series.

Sunday’s Game 1 of the PBA 49th Season Philippine Cup Finals saw Tropang 5G emerge victorious with a 99-96 scoreline, but not without a nail-biting finish and a significant dose of controversy. The Tropang 5G, who at one point led by a commanding 21 points, nearly squandered their massive lead as the Beermen mounted an incredible 19-0 fourth-quarter run.

Despite the Beermen’s furious comeback, timely baskets from TNT in the dying moments helped them narrowly escape a major collapse and secure a crucial 1-0 lead. A key moment came with just 1:04 left on the clock when RR Pogoy, in his first game back from a hamstring injury, drained a crucial go-ahead three-pointer, providing a much-needed lift for TNT.

However, the game’s final moments were overshadowed by a contentious call. With 56.1 seconds remaining, Mo Tautuaa‘s dunk, which would have given the Beermen a one-point lead, was controversially ruled an offensive interference after a review, with the decision being made with only 6.2 seconds left. This call undeniably impacted the outcome and has certainly fueled the fire for Game 2.

With their Game 1 victory, the Tropang 5G are now just three wins away from achieving a truly historic feat: claiming all three PBA titles in a single season. This remarkable accomplishment hasn’t been seen in over a decade, adding an extra layer of stakes to their championship campaign.

Leading the charge for TNT in Game 1 was Pogoy, who had an outstanding performance with 23 points on efficient 7-of-11 shooting from the field, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc and a perfect 2-of-2 from the free-throw line. This was particularly impressive given he missed four semifinal games due to his hamstring injury. Jordan Heading also made significant contributions with 19 points, knocking down 3-of-6 threes and 1-of-1 from the free-throw line, while also dishing out six assists. Calvin Oftana and Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser each added 13 points for TNT.

Despite trailing 67-43 in the third quarter, the San Miguel Beermen showcased incredible resilience, outscoring TNT 30-14 in the final period. June Mar Fajardo was a dominant force for SMB, recording a double-double with 26 points and 15 rebounds. CJ Perez also contributed significantly with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Game 2 is undoubtedly set to be a highly physical and emotional affair as the Beermen look to bounce back and even the series, while TNT aims to build on their lead and inch closer to a historic championship. Fans can expect another thrilling chapter in this compelling PBA Philippine Cup Finals.
