Game 2 Preview: TNT vs. Rain or Shine

Defending champion TNT Tropang Giga is looking to build on its Game 1 victory as it faces Rain or Shine once again in Game 2 of their best-of-seven PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup semifinals series on Friday, October 11, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Cubao.

Fresh off a 90-81 win in the series opener, TNT is poised to push for a 2-0 lead. Now, with momentum on their side, TNT will aim to tighten its grip on the series.

At the heart of TNT’s success is import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, who put on a stellar all-around performance in Game 1. Hollis-Jefferson posted a double-double with 26 points and 13 rebounds while flirting with a triple-double, adding nine assists, five steals, and four blocks — playoff highs for him this conference. His dominance on both ends of the floor has created problems for the Elasto Painters, who now face the difficult task of limiting not just his scoring but his all-around contributions.

Beyond Hollis-Jefferson, TNT also has weapons in RR Pogoy, Jayson Castro, and former Rain or Shine guard Rey Nambatac, who are all expected to provide additional firepower. However, a major concern for the Tropang Giga is the status of veteran Kelly Williams, who exited Game 1 after just six minutes with a left calf injury. Williams has been a key defender for TNT, particularly in his role guarding Rain or Shine’s import Aaron Fuller. If Williams is unavailable moving forward, it could leave TNT scrambling to find a replacement to match up with Fuller.

Fuller, who had a solid Game 1 with 18 points, 21 rebounds, two assists, and a steal, will need to lead Rain or Shine in bouncing back. However, his impact was limited by foul trouble, and the Elasto Painters will need more from their young core of Jhonard Clarito, Andrei Caracut, and Gian Mamuyac if they hope to even the series.

How Rain or Shine adjusts its defense on Hollis-Jefferson and how Fuller handles his matchup will be key factors as Game 2 tips off. The Elasto Painters will need to mount a stronger response if they want to avoid falling into a 0-2 hole against the defending champions.
