Game 5 Preview: San Miguel vs. Ginebra

San Miguel Beer is riding high on the momentum of its Game 4 triumph as they prepare for a crucial Game 5 showdown against Barangay Ginebra in the PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup semifinals.

The series, now tied 2-2, resumes on Friday, Oct. 18, at the Ynares Center in Antipolo, where the Beermen will look to seize control of the best-of-seven battle for the first time.

After a thrilling 131-121 victory on Wednesday, Oct. 16, San Miguel enters Game 5 with renewed confidence, fueled by a stellar performance from their franchise cornerstone, June Mar Fajardo.

The eight-time MVP rebounded from a disappointing Game 3, where he struggled with just 12 points and five turnovers, to dominate Game 4 with 29 points on an efficient 12-for-15 shooting, 16 rebounds, and only one turnover. His return to form is a key factor as the Beermen aim to break the back-and-forth pattern that has defined the series thus far.

Fajardo was well-supported by import EJ Anosike, who contributed a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds, and CJ Perez, who added 20 points, six rebounds, and seven assists. With this well-rounded offensive attack, the Beermen managed to neutralize a phenomenal 49-point explosion from Ginebra’s Justin Brownlee, proving that even the Gin Kings’ brightest star can be dimmed when San Miguel’s roster fires on all cylinders.

For Ginebra, Game 5 presents an opportunity to bounce back and regain control. Despite leading the series twice, the Gin Kings have been unable to sustain their advantage, as San Miguel has consistently found answers after every Ginebra win. Now, the pressure is on coach Tim Cone’s squad to find a way to close out crucial games and prevent the Beermen from securing the series lead.

Justin Brownlee’s heroics kept Ginebra within striking distance in Game 4, but even his 49-point outburst wasn’t enough to counter San Miguel’s balanced attack. Brownlee will once again be the focal point for Ginebra, but he’ll need more support from his teammates, particularly as they try to contain a revitalized Fajardo.

The stakes couldn’t be higher as both teams battle for the upper hand in what has been an intense and tightly contested series. A win in Game 5 would give either team a critical edge as they look to move one step closer to the Governors’ Cup finals.

Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, and fans can expect another hard-fought battle as San Miguel aims to ride the wave of momentum, while Ginebra seeks to regain control and break the deadlock in this thrilling semifinal series.
