Preview: TNT Looks to Extend Lead Over Ginebra in Game 2

Defending champions TNT Tropang Giga look to build on their impressive Game 1 victory as they face Barangay Ginebra in Game 2 of the PBA Governors’ Cup Finals on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Coming off a resounding 104-88 win, the Tropang Giga are riding high with confidence, poised to press for a 2-0 series lead.

In the opener, TNT displayed their depth and composure, with five players scoring in double figures. Import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson anchored the team with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Finals debutant Rey Nambatac made his mark with an all-around performance, posting 18 points, 10 boards, seven assists, and two steals. Veteran Jayson Castro, showcasing vintage form, scored 12 of his 14 points in a dominant third-quarter run that saw TNT create critical separation from Ginebra, stretching their lead to as many as 20 points.

TNT’s stifling defense held the Gin Kings to just 88 points, well below their average of 106.5 points per game, and limited their usually sharp three-point shooting to a mere 9.5% from beyond the arc.

For Ginebra, Justin Brownlee led with 23 points in Game 1, but even his heroics couldn’t lift the Gin Kings, who were playing catch-up after a 12-point first-quarter deficit. The Gin Kings also struggled to get consistent contributions from Scottie Thompson and rookie RJ Abarrientos, who combined for just 12 points. With their backs against the wall, Ginebra needs a stronger start and a more balanced team effort to avoid a 0-2 hole against the defending champs.

The stage is set for another hard-fought battle as Ginebra looks to even the series and TNT pushes to tighten their hold on the Governors’ Cup crown. Tip-off for Game 2 is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Big Dome.
