Game 2 Preview: Ginebra vs. San Miguel

Barangay Ginebra looks to build on its commanding Game 1 victory as it seeks to push San Miguel Beermen to the brink with a 2-0 series lead in their PBA Season 49 Governors’ Cup semifinals showdown.

The Gin Kings dominated the second half of Game 1, pulling away for a convincing 122-105 win. Led by the stellar outside shooting of Justin Brownlee, who buried 5-of-6 from four-point range, Ginebra outscored the Beermen 34-20 in a crucial third quarter to take control of the game. Brownlee’s all-around brilliance was on full display as he finished with 33 points, making it clear that containing the Ginebra import will be a tall task for San Miguel heading into Game 2.

While Brownlee grabbed most of the headlines, Stephen Holt’s contribution cannot be overlooked. The rising star provided a strong complement to Brownlee with a near triple-double performance, recording 30 points, eight rebounds, and four assists in 42 minutes. Holt also played lockdown defense on San Miguel’s key players, including import EJ Anosike, making him a key player that San Miguel will need to address if they hope to even the series.

San Miguel, on the other hand, struggled to contain Ginebra’s offensive firepower while failing to get their usual dominant performance from star center June Mar Fajardo. Fajardo posted solid numbers with 16 points, 16 rebounds, and nine assists, but only attempted nine shots from the field — his lowest number since Game 2 of the quarterfinals against Converge. The 6-foot-10 MVP also struggled from the free-throw line, hitting just 5-of-10 attempts, uncharacteristic for someone who shot 76 percent from the charity stripe during the eliminations.

After a monstrous 40-point, 24-rebound performance in San Miguel’s quarterfinal clincher, Fajardo will need a more assertive Game 2 for the Beermen to have a chance to swing the momentum. A bigger game from him, along with improved defense on Ginebra’s sharpshooters, could help San Miguel even the series.

With Ginebra firing on all cylinders and San Miguel looking for answers, Game 2 promises to be a pivotal clash in this best-of-seven series. The Gin Kings are aiming to take a commanding 2-0 lead, while the Beermen will be desperate to avoid falling into a deeper hole as the semifinals roll on.
