Game 2 Preview: Ginebra vs. Meralco

The Meralco Bolts are facing a must-win situation in Game 2 of their PBA Governors’ Cup quarterfinal series against the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.

Ginebra took a 1-0 lead in the series with a victory in Game 1, led by the dominant performance of Justin Brownlee. Meralco will need to play much better to avoid falling behind 0-2.

In Game 1, Ginebra seized control early, leading by as much as 15 points. The Gin Kings were fueled by another stellar performance from import Justin Brownlee, who notched 29 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists, and three steals. Brownlee’s all-around brilliance, supported by Scottie Thompson’s 19 points and Stephen Holt’s 14 points, helped Ginebra maintain their advantage despite a late Meralco rally.

For the Bolts, Cliff Hodge had a standout performance with 23 points and five rebounds, while Chris Newsome added 20 points. Import Allen Durham recorded a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds, but their efforts fell short of overcoming Ginebra’s balanced attack.

The Bolts have shown that they are capable of making comebacks, especially in the 2024 Philippine Cup semifinals when they defeated Ginebra from a 3-2 deficit. However, they will need to play with a sense of urgency from the start of the game to avoid playing catch-up.

This series promises to be a competitive one, with both teams eager to advance to the semifinals. Meralco will need to play their best basketball to stay alive in the championship race.
