Game Preview: Gilas Pilipinas vs. Lithuania

The Gilas Pilipinas Boys are gearing up for a challenging start as they face powerhouse Lithuania in the opener of the 2024 FIBA U17 World Cup at the Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey.

This highly anticipated match, set for Saturday, June 29 (Manila time), marks the beginning of the Filipino squad’s quest for basketball glory on the world stage.

The young Filipinos enter the clash as underdogs against Lithuania, currently ranked 7th in the world. Despite this challenge, Gilas Pilipinas is determined to cause an upset and make a statement in the 16-team tournament. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 PM (Manila time).

The Gilas camp suffered a significant setback with the loss of star guard Kieffer Alas, who is out with a knee injury. Alas averaged an impressive 15.4 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. However, the team boasts a talented roster with players like Kurt Nathan Velasquez, Joaquin Ludovice, Irus Chua, and Champ Arejola (who will replace Alas) ready to lead the charge.

The team also features Elijah Williams, Cletz David Amos, Edryn Morales, Bonn Daja, Paul Diao, Jaime Gomez De Liaño, Samuel Alegre, and Noah Banal. Their collective efforts will be crucial in exceeding the Philippines’ previous 13th place finish at the 2018 World Cup.

Following their encounter with Lithuania, the Gilas Boys will face another strong opponent in World No. 2 Spain on June 30th. Their group stage concludes with a matchup against No. 15 Puerto Rico on July 2nd. While no eliminations occur in the group phase, a strong showing will ensure a favorable pairing in the crossover Round of 16, potentially avoiding other powerhouses.

Lithuania, Puerto Rico, and Spain hold a dominant presence in the tournament, having finished on the podium in the past three editions. Spain, in particular, secured a silver medal in the 2022 championship behind the USA.

Coached by Josh Reyes, Gilas Pilipinas earned a semifinal finish at the FIBA U16 Asian Championship last year. This achievement marked their return to the World Cup after a gap since 2018, when the “triple towers” of Kai Sotto, AJ Edu, and Carl Tamayo represented the Philippines.
