Alas Pilipinas Battles Hard Against Korabelka, Settles for VTV Cup Bronze Match Spot
Alas Pilipinas Women put up a brave fight but ultimately fell short against defending champion Korabelka of Russia, 25-16, 25-27, 25-17, 25-22, in the semifinals of the 2025 VTV International Women’s Volleyball Cup on Friday in Vietnam.
The Filipinas showed heart and grit, especially in the second set, but the more experienced and powerful Russian squad proved too much to handle in key moments. With the loss, Alas Pilipinas is now headed to the bronze medal match on Saturday, where they will face the Chinese Taipei.
Korabelka started strong, using a 10-4 run in the opening set to break away from an 8-all deadlock—despite early points from Brooke Van Sickle and a service ace by MJ Phillips. The Russians’ solid net defense and consistent attacks secured a commanding 25-16 win in the first frame.
In the second set, the Filipinas responded with poise and determination. Trailing 22-24, Phillips and Alleiah Malaluan delivered clutch attacks to keep the set alive. After a block on Phillips gave Korabelka another set point at 24-25, Malaluan responded with a smart long shot to tie it, followed by a Russian error. The former La Salle standout then capped the comeback with a backrow hit to seal the set, 27-25, leveling the match at one set apiece.
Korabelka, however, showed their championship composure in the third set, regaining control with a 25-17 win to take a 2-1 lead. In the fourth, the Filipinas fell behind by as much as seven, 15-8, but clawed their way back with an impressive run, narrowing the gap to 15-14.
Later in the set, Alas Pilipinas stayed within striking distance at 19-18 after a timely attack by Vanie Gandler, but Korabelka responded with a 3-0 run to widen the gap to 22-18. An attack error by the Russians and a service ace by Lams Lamina brought the Philippines closer, 23-21. Tia Andaya then saved a match point off a clever push from a back set, cutting it to 24-22. However, Korabelka eventually broke through with a kill off Malaluan’s hands to clinch the match and advance to the finals.
