Alas Pilipinas vs. Vietnam // 2025 SEA Men’s V.League

Alas Pilipinas Men are ready to defend home soil as they open their campaign against regional powerhouse Vietnam in the Candon leg of the 2025 SEA Men’s V.League, set from July 9 to 13 at the Candon City Arena in Ilocos Sur.

The Philippines is one of five nations competing in this leg, along with Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Cambodia. With FIVB world ranking points and a $13,000 champion’s prize on the line, the stage is set for high-stakes volleyball action in front of a passionate 8,000-strong hometown crowd.

Coming off bronze-medal finishes in both legs last season, Alas Pilipinas is gunning for a higher spot on the podium despite being without star spiker Marck Espejo, who is recovering from a mild ankle sprain. This marks the second straight year the team will be without one of its top guns after Bryan Bagunas suffered a knee injury in last year’s first leg.

In Espejo’s absence, the spotlight now shifts to explosive outside hitter Kennedy Batas, the reigning UAAP Most Valuable Player, Fil-Am Steve Rotter and Jackson Reed. Both are expected to carry the offensive load as the Philippines aims to rack up valuable ranking points.

The squad also sees the return of key players Kim Malabunga, Owa Retamar, Peng Taguibolos, Louie Ramirez, Buds Buddin, Lloyd Josafat, Jade Disquitado, Leo Ordiales, and Josh Ybañez under the guidance of Italian head coach Angiolino Frigoni.

On the other side, Vietnam is eager to break into the medal ranks after two straight fourth-place finishes. Led by AVC standouts Van Quoc Duy, T.D. Tuyen, and Ngoc Thuan, the Vietnamese side is expected to pose a serious challenge with their speed, precision, and team cohesion.

With fierce rivals and a full house expected in Candon, the Philippines vs. Vietnam matchup will be one of the most anticipated duels in the opening stretch of the 2025 SEA Men’s V.League. It’s a crucial early test for both teams as they look to assert themselves in Southeast Asia’s top volleyball competition.
