Gilas U17 ends group stage winless after falling to Puerto Rico

The Gilas Pilipinas U17 team’s fight continues despite another setback in the 2024 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup. They fell short against Puerto Rico, dropping their final Group A game with a score of 98-53.

While the scoreboard may not reflect it, glimpses of promise emerged for the young Filipinos throughout the matchup.

Gilas started strong, leading by eight points (24-16) after the first quarter. However, Puerto Rico responded with a dominant offensive display in the second and third quarters. A scorching 32-6 run in the second period effectively broke the game open, followed by a lopsided 30-4 third quarter that put the game out of reach for the Filipinos.

Although the outcome wasn’t ideal, Gilas displayed moments of brilliance. Joaquin Ludovice paced the team in scoring with 13 points, followed by Kurt Velasquez’s contribution of 10 points. Cletz David Amos tallied eight markers and six boards.

Puerto Rico, on the other hand, showcased their offensive prowess. Five of their players reached double digits in scoring, with Jordan Dill leading the way with 15 points. Vincent Stewart Jr. notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Jahrel Vigo, Rognny Santiago, and Justin Roman all chipped in with 10 points each.

Despite the loss, Gilas Pilipinas will gain valuable experience from this tournament. Their next challenge will be a daunting one, as they face the mighty Team USA in the round of 16 on Wednesday.
