Gilas Pilipinas Boys shows late fight, falls short against Argentina in U17 World Cup

The struggles continued for Gilas Pilipinas Youth in the FIBA U17 World Cup classification round, as they fell to Argentina 83-67 on Friday, July 5th, at the Ahmet Comert Sports Hall in Istanbul, Turkey. Despite a valiant late-game stand, they couldn’t overcome a slow start and Argentina’s strong offensive performance.

Similar to their previous encounters, Gilas Boys faced an uphill battle from the beginning. Argentina established a dominant lead early on, ending the first quarter with a 12-point advantage (27-15). This deficit continued to grow throughout the first half, with Argentina leading by as many as 29 points in the third quarter (81-52).

Gilas Youth displayed admirable resilience, mounting a significant comeback attempt in the fourth quarter. A scorching 15-0 run brought them within 14 points with just over two minutes remaining (67-81). However, the early deficit proved too much to overcome, as Argentina held on to secure the victory.

Despite the loss, this game marked a positive development for Gilas. With 67 points scored, they surpassed their previous offensive outputs throughout the tournament.

Kurt Velasquez led the team with 17 points, while Bonn Ervin Daja added a double-double with 15 points and 9 rebounds.

Velasquez and Daja paced the scoring for Gilas, demonstrating their offensive capabilities. Argentina, on the other hand, relied on the well-rounded performance of Martin Torriani (15 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists) and Tyler Kropp (13 points, 9 rebounds).

With this loss, Gilas Pilipinas Youth will now face Asian rival China in the classification round on Saturday, July 6th. Both teams are vying for a higher finish in the 13th to 16th place range. This matchup presents an opportunity for Gilas to finally register their first win in the tournament and end their U17 World Cup campaign on a positive note.
