Gilas Boys takes another tough loss to Spain in FIBA U17 World Cup

The Gilas Pilipinas U17 squad’s journey in the 2024 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup continues to be a steep climb.

On Sunday, they faced another formidable opponent, world no. 2 Spain, and fell 96-34 at the Sinan Erdem Dome in Turkey.

The young Filipinos, already ranked lower at no. 37 in the world, faced a significant height disadvantage against the European champions. This was reflected in the rebounding battle, where Spain dominated with a 71-22 edge.

Compounding their woes, Gilas’ shooting woes from their previous game persisted, as they only managed a dismal 22.22% shooting clip compared to Spain’s efficient 47.37%.

Despite the lopsided defeat, Bonn Daja provided a bright spot for Gilas with a 12-point and 5-rebound performance. Joaquin Ludovice also chipped in with seven points and two assists.

Spain, on the other hand, showcased their offensive depth with four players scoring in double digits. Maximo Garcia-Plata led the charge with a near triple-double of 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 9 assists. Guillermo Del Pino (14 points and five assists), Ignacio Campoy (13 points and 11 rebounds), and Eric Del Castillo (13 points and nine rebounds) all contributed significantly, highlighting Spain’s overall offensive strength.

The Philippines will wrap up their group stage campaign against Puerto Rico on July 2nd at the same venue.
