Carlos Yulo soars to three finals in Paris Olympics
Filipino gymnastics sensation Carlos Yulo has booked his spot in three finals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, putting him in prime position to win the country’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in the sport.
Yulo’s performance marks a significant improvement from his previous campaign at the Tokyo Games. He excelled in the qualification round, finishing second in the floor exercise and sixth in the vault—events where he previously clinched world titles. His scores of 14.766 in the floor exercise and an average of 14.683 in the vault underscore his elite talent and potential for medal contention.
In the floor exercise, Yulo’s score was just shy of Great Britain’s Jake Jarman, who led the field with 14.966 points. Meanwhile, in the vault, Yulo’s combined score of 14.683 positioned him among the top competitors, with Ukraine’s Nazar Chepurnyi topping the qualification with 14.833 points.
Despite facing challenges in other apparatuses—such as the pommel horse, where he scored 13.066, and the still rings, where he tallied 13.000—Yulo’s overall score of 83.631 points was enough to secure ninth place in the all-around final. This performance places him among the world’s elite gymnasts, as the top 24 in the all-around and the top eight in each apparatus advance to the finals.
Yulo also delivered solid performances in the parallel bars (14.533, 19th place) and horizontal bar (13.466, 27th place), achieving marks that were a full point higher than his scores in Tokyo.
The all-around final is scheduled for July 31, followed by the floor exercise and vault finals on August 3 and 4, respectively. As Yulo steps into these finals, the entire nation watches in anticipation, hopeful that he will secure a historic medal for the Philippines.
With his sights set on the podium, Carlos Yulo’s journey in the 2024 Paris Olympics is one to watch. Stay tuned for updates on his performance and potential medal wins.
