Alas Pilipinas’ title run ends in Bahrain, shifts focus to classification round

The dream of claiming the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup title for Men has come to an end for Alas Pilipinas after a straight-set defeat (25-18, 25-23, 25-20) against host nation Bahrain on Tuesday morning (Philippine time).

Despite a valiant effort, the Philippines couldn’t overcome the strong Bahrain squad. Though they displayed moments of brilliance, consistency eluded the Filipinos throughout the match. This loss follows their opening defeat against China, resulting in a 0-2 record and elimination from the championship contention.

China and Bahrain, both currenlty holding 1-0 win-loss records in Pool A, will now advance to the quarterfinals.

Kim Malabunga led the Philippine offense with eight points, including six attacks and two blocks. Jade Disquitado, also impressed with seven points in the final two sets.

Co-captains Marck Espejo and Jau Umandal also put up a strong fight. Espejo scored seven points with five attacks, one block, and one ace, while Umandal added seven points from six attacks and one block.

While their championship aspirations have been dashed, Alas Pilipinas will now set their sights on the classification round. Their next opponent will be determined by the outcome of the remaining matches between Indonesia and Qatar.
