Akari soars in PVL Reinforced Conference debut, upsets Capital1

The Akari Chargers sent a strong message in their opening match of the 2024 PVL Reinforced Conference, defeating Capital1 Solar Spikers in a thrilling four-set battle (25-18, 27-25, 22-25, 25-14) on Thursday night at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

American import Oly Okaro marked her debut with a stellar performance, leading the Chargers’ offensive charge with a remarkable 16 points. Her effective attacks and strategic plays were instrumental in Akari’s success, especially considering their seventh-place finish in the previous All-Filipino Conference. The acquisition of Okaro, coupled with a strategic trade with sister team Nxled, seems to be paying dividends for Akari.

Joining Okaro in the offensive spotlight was Ivy Lacsina, who debuted for Akari after transferring from Nxled. Lacsina displayed her prowess on the court, leading the team in scoring with 20 points. Her seamless integration with the Chargers’ existing core is a positive sign for their future matches.

Despite the loss, Capital1 displayed commendable resilience throughout the match. Russian import Marina Tushova led their offensive attack with 20 points, showcasing her potential as a valuable asset. Iris Tolenada, making her debut for Capital1, also impressed with 10 excellent sets and seven points. Second overall pick Leila Cruz and Des Clemente contributed seven points each, demonstrating the team’s developing offensive depth.

Akari will carry their momentum into their next match on Tuesday, facing a tough opponent in Choco Mucho. Capital1 will also play on Tuesday, aiming for redemption against the reigning champions Petro Gazz. Both matches will take place at the Philsports Arena, promising another exciting night of PVL action.
