Game Preview: Strong Group vs. UAE
The Philippines’ quest to reclaim the William Jones Cup title begins on Saturday, July 13th, as Strong Group Athletics takes on the United Arab Emirates in Taipei.
Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM, with the Filipino squad looking to end a championship drought that stretches back to 2019.
The last time the Philippines tasted victory in the prestigious tournament was in 2019, with coach Charles Tiu leading Mighty Sports to the top. That team featured Renaldo Balkman, Eugene Phelps, Mikey Williams, and Jeremiah Grey as key contributors.
This year, Coach Tiu returns to the helm, leading a formidable lineup boasting former PBA champion import Chris McCullough and Gilas Pilipinas naturalized player Ange Kouame. The duo forms a potent frontline alongside six foot nine reinforcement Tajuan Agee, creating a triple-tower threat for opposing teams.
Veteran guard Kiefer Ravena leads the backcourt, joined by the likes of Jordan Heading, Dave Ildefonso, and the exciting young talent RJ Abarrientos. Rhenz Abando provides additional firepower on the wing, while Filipino-Americans DJ Fenner and Caelan Tiongson bolster the perimeter defense. Rounding out the squad are promising young guns Geo Chiu, Allen Liwag, Titing Manalili, and Tony Ynot.
This Strong Group-Pilipinas squad faces a challenging group stage. Aside from the UAE, they’ll also encounter the Japan U22 team, two squads from host nation Chinese Taipei (Blue and White), the Brisbane South Basketball League Guardians from Australia, Ukraine, and Future Sports USA.
